How to Increase Average Order Value on Shopify: 7 Proven Tactics, Shopify guide by Azizul Islam

Quick answer: the fastest way to grow Shopify revenue without more traffic is to raise average order value (AOV). Use product bundles, a free-shipping threshold, quantity discounts, “frequently bought together” suggestions and a well-placed cart upsell.

Getting a new customer costs money. Selling a little more to the customer who is already buying costs almost nothing. That is why AOV is one of the first numbers I improve on a growing store.

Find your current AOV

Open Analytics in your Shopify admin and check average order value for the last 30 and 90 days. Write it down. Every change below should be measured against it.

1. Set a free-shipping threshold

Set free shipping slightly above your current AOV, for example 20 to 30 percent higher. Shoppers often add one more item to qualify. Show the threshold in the announcement bar and a progress bar in the cart.

2. Create product bundles

  • Group products that are used together: a starter kit, a routine, a complete look.
  • Price the bundle a little below buying each item separately.
  • Give bundles their own product page with clear photos of everything included.

3. Offer quantity discounts

“Buy 2, save 10%” or “Buy 3, get 1 free” works well for consumables, gifts and basics like socks or skincare. Show the tiers right above the Add to Cart button so the choice is easy.

4. Add “frequently bought together”

Suggest one or two genuinely related products on the product page. Shopify’s product recommendations and complementary products can power this, or a lightweight app.

5. Upsell in the cart drawer

A slide-out cart is the perfect place for one small, relevant add-on: a care kit, an accessory or a gift wrap option. Keep it to one suggestion so it does not distract from checkout.

6. Use post-purchase offers carefully

A one-click offer after payment does not risk the original sale. Offer something small and related at a special price. Test it, and remove it if customers complain.

7. Sell gift cards and gift options

Gift cards and gift wrapping add value at almost no cost, especially before holidays.

What to avoid

  • Too many popups and upsells on one page. They slow the store and annoy buyers.
  • Irrelevant suggestions. A random upsell feels like a trick.
  • Discounts so deep that a bigger order earns you less profit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good average order value on Shopify?

It depends entirely on your niche and price point. Compare against your own history and aim to grow it steadily, rather than chasing someone else’s number.

Do upsell apps slow down my store?

Some do. Choose lightweight apps or build simple upsells directly into the theme, and test speed after installing anything.

Bundles or quantity discounts, which is better?

Quantity discounts suit products people reorder or buy in multiples. Bundles suit products used together. Many stores use both.

Want bundles and upsells built into your theme?

Bundles, quantity offers and a custom cart drawer with a free-shipping bar are part of my Premium package, built in Liquid without extra app fees. See packages or message me on WhatsApp.
