Meta Pixel Not Tracking Shopify Purchases? How to Fix It, Shopify guide by Azizul Islam

Quick answer: if your Meta (Facebook) pixel is not tracking Shopify purchases, connect it through the official Facebook & Instagram app, set data sharing to the highest level so the Conversions API is active, remove any old manual pixel code, and check your customer privacy settings. Then test with Events Manager.

When purchases do not reach Meta, your ads optimise blind and your cost per sale climbs. This is one of the most common problems I fix for Shopify stores, and it usually comes down to a few setup mistakes.

Signs your tracking is broken

  • Shopify shows orders from Meta ads, but Ads Manager shows no or few purchases.
  • Events Manager shows PageView but no AddToCart or Purchase events.
  • Purchases are counted twice.
  • Events Manager warns about low event match quality.

1. Connect the pixel through the official app

Install the Facebook & Instagram app (by Meta) from the Shopify App Store and connect your Business Manager, ad account and pixel. This sends the standard events (ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, Purchase) from storefront and checkout automatically.

2. Turn on maximum data sharing (Conversions API)

In the app’s data sharing settings, choose the highest level. This enables the Conversions API, which sends events from server to server and is much less affected by ad blockers and browser privacy limits than the browser pixel alone.

3. Remove old manual pixel code

Many stores still have pixel code pasted into theme.liquid or legacy checkout script fields from years ago. Combined with the app, this causes duplicate or broken events. Shopify’s checkout no longer supports old checkout scripts, so purchase tracking should come from the app or Shopify’s customer events, not pasted code.

If you use a cookie banner, events may only fire after a visitor gives consent. That is expected in regions with privacy laws, but check that your banner is configured correctly and is not blocking tracking for every visitor by mistake.

5. Verify your domain in Meta Business Manager

Verify your store’s domain in Business Settings under Brand safety and suitability, Domains. It helps Meta attribute events from your site to your business.

6. Test before you trust it

  • Open Events Manager > Test events, enter your store URL and click through a product, add to cart and checkout.
  • Use the Meta Pixel Helper browser extension to see which events fire on each page.
  • Check that browser and server events are deduplicated, so one purchase is counted once.

7. Improve event match quality

Meta matches events to people using details like email and phone, sent securely and hashed. Maximum data sharing in the official app handles most of this. Collecting email early in checkout also helps.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Shopify show more sales than Meta Ads Manager?

Some difference is normal because of attribution windows, privacy settings and people who see an ad on one device and buy on another. A large gap usually means the Conversions API is off or the purchase event is not firing.

Do I still need the browser pixel if I use the Conversions API?

Yes. Meta recommends using both together, with deduplication, for the most complete data.

How long until fixed tracking improves my ads?

Events appear in Events Manager within minutes of a test. Ad performance improves gradually as campaigns collect accurate purchase data again.
